Frequently asked questions

Every company currently using SAP ECC needs to migrate to SAP S/4HANA. SAP will end mainstream maintenance for SAP ECC at the end of 2027. Companies that need support for longer can opt for extended maintenance until the end of 2030 for an additional fee. After that, regular security and legal updates will no longer be provided, which is not an option for many mid-sized companies for compliance reasons alone.

Mainstream maintenance for SAP ECC ends at the end of 2027. Extended maintenance is available until the end of 2030 for an additional fee. Once this expires, there will be no more regular fixes, legal updates or security updates.

An S/4HANA migration is the move from an existing SAP system, usually ECC, to SAP S/4HANA. Typical phases include: readiness check and process analysis, target vision and migration strategy, cleanup of data and custom code, implementation and testing, cutover and subsequent support.

The Readiness Check is an analysis of your existing ECC system that identifies obstacles to migration: affected custom developments, add-on compatibility, simplification items and the expected database size. It provides the fact-based foundation for estimating effort, time and costs and for recommending the right migration path.

Greenfield is a new implementation with processes closely aligned to the standard. Brownfield is the technical conversion of the existing ECC system, retaining data and customizing. Bluefield, also known as selective data transition, is the hybrid approach in which selected processes and data are transferred in a targeted way. In practice, most of the projects we support for existing clients are brownfield conversions.

Brownfield is often the right choice if your existing processes are solid and you want to preserve your investments in customizing. Greenfield tends to pay off if your processes have grown significantly over time and you want to return to the standard. Bluefield is the middle ground if both apply in part.

Depending on the starting situation and migration path, it can take anything from a few months for a lean system close to the standard to several quarters or more than a year for systems with many custom developments and complex processes. A Readiness Check allows you to plan a realistic timeline at an early stage.

A reliable cost estimate is only possible after a Readiness Check, as system size, the number of custom developments, the migration path and the operating model have a major impact on costs. Our analysis phase creates cost transparency before any implementation budget is committed.

Custom developments, i.e. Z programs and modifications, are assessed in a custom code analysis: What is still needed, what is compatible with S/4HANA, and what can be replaced by standard functionality or Fiori? The goal is to reduce technical debt rather than carry it over.

The first step is usually an initial consultation followed by a Readiness Check. The Readiness Check assesses your SAP landscape, recommends the right migration path and provides a roadmap including timeline and budget. This allows you to start on a fact-based foundation before any implementation budget is committed.

Common reasons include a lack of process perspective, underestimating the effort involved in custom code and data cleansing, and neglecting change management. This is exactly where our process-oriented, cross-module approach comes in.

RISE with SAP is the path for existing SAP customers to a private, dedicated SAP Cloud ERP, with control over their own customizations and upgrade windows. GROW with SAP is aimed at new customers who want to implement the standardized, public SAP Cloud ERP quickly. For typical mid-sized SAP customers with an ECC system that has grown over time, RISE is usually the more relevant option.

Look for proven migration experience, independence from product and licensing interests, a focus on mid-sized companies and a process-oriented approach rather than purely technical implementation. itprocess GmbH matches exactly this profile as an independent partner for existing SAP customers in the mid-market.
